I have been a Strava member since November of 2017, and my watch has always been connected but I just recently started being more active on it. I think that my favorite parts are connecting with other runners and earning TROPHIES!
Joining is so freaking easy, and you can either track workouts through GPS on the app itself (available in both Apple & Android stores).. There is no cost to join Strava, but there is a Summit option, which is a paid subscription. That gives you access to more options and tools for your training. Summit Training is what I use for my training plans. I love that I can track my running, and my HIIT workouts, or lifting via my Apple Watch using the Strava app!
