So it is safe to say that December was a rough month for me. I hit the winter funk like a champion, eating like crud, not running, and a general funk. So I have been doing some things to combat this. Mental health is such a big deal for me, as a recovering addict, depression can be a huge trigger. So here is what I did to help battle my funk, please remember if you think you are depressed, reach out to someone. It is ok, to not be ok. These are my go to ways to help me during the long cold winter months.
This is such a hard one for me, since I HATE the cold weather. I think that was part of my funk, I missed running and getting moving. So I tried a 7 day pass to Anytime Fitness and this helped almost immediately. I will admit that the first 5k after almost 3 weeks, was painful. I was so sore the next day but even that felt great. My mood was instantly lifted by getting some movement in.
I struggle with hydration all year but seem to get worse in the winter. In Iowa we have some very cold and dry winters, which means that this becomes even more important. I can’t do just plain water, so I have my Nuun Hydration tablets in my purse, at home and at work! These are great because they also have extra vitamins, and of course, I have some with caffeine.
Meditate or Try Some Yoga
For me, the simple act of clearing my mind can make a world of difference. I set some winter yoga goals, since I knew whether it was snowing, icy or just plain freezing, that I could make time for yoga. My goal was to work on my inversions, specifically my handstands. So I have a long way to go but was able to hold it and do some other stretches that really help my mood. You don’t have to take a class or go crazy, sometimes just slowing your breathing and stretching can help you mood.
